This sparrow lived in the awning above the front door to my building, which I can see from my bedroom window. Each morning, he would sit on the wrought iron in a spot where the decorative glass had fallen out and would sing. I woke up like this each morning. One day, I woke to find him on the ground under the awning. I miss his song.

They say you are supposed to start your year doing the things you want to do for the rest of the year. So, I drew. I sang, as rusty as I was. And I played my guitar. All things I want to get better at this year. Hopefully by 2023 I won't be such an amateur at the last two.

I am not sure if this is, indeed, a goldfinch. I haven't been able to accurately identify it. But it glowed with gold on the Brooklyn streets. I buried it underneath a tree.
